IMPLICATIONS OF EIL IN EDUCATION: EXPLORING ADVANTAGES AND ISSUES Samina Kalsoom , Alia Farooqui , Sumaira Ata ABSTARCT Being a global language and a medium of communication across languages and countries, English is now mutually accepted as a lingua franca worldwide. As a result, its significance in the field of education has increased as well. However, the presence of several local as well as international varieties of English has created an environment of confusion in terms of what to teach and how. By exploring the current situation of English in the educational context, this paper proposes EIL as a teaching pedagogy which accepts and incorporates all the varieties of English on one side and on the other gives freedom to the teachers and students in taking decisions about teaching methodologies, teaching material, assessment etc., according to their needs and choices. It is hoped that if implemented carefully, an EIL pedagogy can serve as a solution to teachers and students around the world by creating an environment of tolerance and mutual understanding and can possibly bring uniformity in English language teaching and learning at both international and intranational level.
